THE COACH BEN MOORE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A native Queens, New Yorker and a graduate of Livingstone College, Coach Ben Moore was a staple of Peninsula District and AAU basketball for nearly three decades. A true GIANT in Peninsula District athletics, Coach Ben Moore began his ministry at the Dorie Miller Community Center, where he was a mentor, a steller role model, and a surrogate father figure to so many youth from downtown Newport News. He subsequently coached varsity basketball at Warwick and Menchville High Schools, where he supported ALL athletic teams and was a mainstay at Cross Country, Track and Field meets. Coach Moore was always dispensing wisdom and using athletics and his beloved Beta Sigma Club to get through to all students.
The inaugural Ben Moore Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to an education major at Livingstone College. Click below to apply by August 28, 2020. NONE OF THE FUNDS COLLECTED FOR THE OPTIMIZING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS WILL BE AWARDED TO MY SON, whose diligence in securing scholarships and tuition remission to fund all tuition, fees, room & board, pre-college expenses, and books enabled me to devote months of logistical planning to this initiative to benefit other students. At warwick high school, everybody respected coach! As a minister, Coach Moore could be counted on to give excellent guidance about career issues, social justice issues, financial issues, and even family matters. Most of all, Ben Moore was passionate about teaching and coaching because he had an unquestioned calling to save young lives through athletics and education. His passing in December 2017 left a vacancy that 50 men and women could not replace. |
