As one of the most effective means of expanding educational opportunities for members of marginalized communities, grant writing is an integral part of MDC’S efforts to use education to transform students' lives.
In 2014, Mikael Davis Consulting co-drafted the successful $300,000 Office of Violence Against Women’s proposal to reduce sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking on the Hampton University campus. In 2015, MD Consulting supported the successful application for a $1,615,739 federal TRIO grant to provide free tutoring, academic coaching and tracking, annual graduate and professional school tours, and limited grant aid for 190 low-income and first-generation students at Hampton University from September 1, 2016 - August 31, 2021. From January - March 2015, MD Consulting collaborated with current Talent Search staff to create the program design and draft the budget and program narrative for a $2,118,187 continuation grant to support 810 middle and high school students in Hampton City Schools. On July 15, 2016, the Department of Education notified Hampton University that its Talent Search initiative would be funded from September 1, 2016 through August 31, 2021. In February 2017, MD Consulting collaborated with Hampton University to create the project design, formulate the budget, and draft the project narrative for an Upward Bound grant that Hampton was awarded to support college access and degree completion for 60 promising low-income and first-generation students in Newport News Public Schools. The grant, totaling $1,381,723 will fund the UB program from September 1, 2017 - August 31, 2022. In April 2017, Mikael Davis Consulting supported a Ronald McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program grant proposal to increase research activities and improve doctoral degree enrollment and completion rates among underrepresented students at Hampton University. The grant, totaling $1,260,873 will fund the McNair Scholars program from October 1, 2017 - September 30, 2022. And in February 2020, we drafted the application for a $1.75 Million federal TRIO grant that Hampton University was recently awarded to provide proactive intrusive advising, tutoring, peer mentoring, mid-term deficiency counseling, financial literacy, and access to graduate and professional school tours for 190 low-income and first-generation students from September 1, 2021 - August 31, 2026. In February 2021, Mikael Davis Consulting drafted the $2,232,855 continuation grant to fund a five-year Talent Search Program to provide onsite and online tutoring, academic advising, college tours, career exploration and preparation, time management and study-skills enhancement, a comprehensive suite of financial aid and financial literacy seminars, and SAT/ACT test preparation workshops to improve secondary school persistence, increase regular and advanced secondary school diploma completion, and optimize postsecondary education enrollment and degree completion among a cadre of 810 low-income and/or first generation secondary school participants in Hampton City Schools from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2026. In February 2022, Mikael Davis Consulting drafted the $1,487,995 Upward Bound continuation grant that Hampton University was awarded to fund the program from September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2027. This grant will expand upon the previous proposal and will provide onsite and online tutoring, academic advising, college tours, career exploration and preparation, time management and study-skills enhancement, a comprehensive suite of financial aid and financial literacy seminars, and SAT/ACT test preparation workshops to improve secondary school persistence, increase regular and advanced secondary school diploma completion, and optimize postsecondary education enrollment and degree completion among a cadre of 60 low-income and/or first generation secondary school participants in Newport News.
