THE LARRY LEON STEPHENSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A graduate of Huntington High School’s Class of 1970, Larry Leon Stephenson enlisted as a non-commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps, serving honorably from August 21, 1970 to August 20, 1972, to include a yearlong deployment to Vietnam. During his service, Mr. Stephenson obtained the rank of corporal and earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Marksmanship Rifle Badge. Upon the conclusion of his military service, Larry earned his nursing license and practiced nursing at Whitaker Memorial Hospital in Newport News and at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond, VA. For several years after he concluded his career in nursing, Larry provided exceptional assistance to his beloved aunt Amanette Sessom. Ever the caregiver, for twelve of the last eighteen months of his life, Larry provided in-home nursing care to his nephew’s father, helping to prolong James Cotton’s life during his battle with stage 4 brain cancer.
A humble servant, a man of faith, a lover of family, Larry Leon Stephenson was a husband, a father, a war veteran, and our family's shining Black Knight! In his honor, a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a Nursing major at Hampton University and to a Biology/Pre-Med major at the College of William & Mary. Click below to apply.
