In 1763, Parliament passed the Stamp Act, a tax on legal documents used to pay costs incurred during the French and Indian War and for British troops to protect the colonists. The Stamp Act, and other Parliamentary taxes infuriating the colonists and resistance to British rule mounted, leading to war.
