LARRY LEON STEPHENSON
MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A graduate of Huntington High School’s Class of 1970, Larry Leon Stephenson enlisted as a non-commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps, serving honorably from August 21, 1970 to August 20, 1972, to include a yearlong deployment to Vietnam.  During his service, Mr. Stephenson obtained the rank of corporal and earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Marksmanship Rifle Badge.  Upon the conclusion of his military service, Larry earned his nursing license and practiced nursing at Whitaker Memorial Hospital in Newport News and at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond, VA.

A humble servant, a man of faith, a lover of family, Larry Leon Stephenson was a husband, a father, a war veteran, and our family's shining Black Knight! 
In his honor, a scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student in the Master of Science in Bio-Medical Science program at Hampton University. Click below to apply.  Applications are due by August 28, 2020 and awards will  be announced at the Optimizing Student Achievement Banquet on September 27, 2020.    ​

NONE OF THE FUNDS COLLECTED FOR THE OPTIMIZING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS WILL BE AWARDED TO MY SON, whose diligence in securing scholarships and tuition remission to fund all tuition, fees, room & board, pre-college expenses, and books enabled me to devote months of logistical planning to this initiative to benefit other students. All receivables and capital outlays will be detailed in our forthcoming annual report. ​

for several years after he ended his nursing Career, my uncle larry provided great care to his aunt and my grandmother, amanette Jean sessom. for twelve of the last eighteen months of his own life, larry provided in-home nursing care to my father, helping to prolong james cotton's life during his battle with stage 4 brain cancer.
