ABOUT THE GED TEST

According to Kaplan, the GED test is a widely used exam that demonstrates high school equivalency as well as a student's readiness for college and/or a particular career. The test is designed to test your facility with the reading, writing, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills needed to succeed in post-secondary educational programs and many vocational settings. As such, a GED can be your door to better paying jobs, more education, or more rewarding career opportunities.  

GED TEST OVERVIEW                                             

REASONING THROUGH LANGUAGE ARTS - 2.5 Hours with one 10 minute break
  • Approximately 50 - 55 Questions
  • Includes 1 extended written response to reading passages - up to 45 minutes to complete.

MATHEMATICAL REASONING - 1 Hour, 55 Minutes
  • Approximately 40 - 45 Questions
  • First section - 5 questions, no calculator allowed.
  • Second section - Texas Instruments TI-30XS MultiView calculator allowed

SOCIAL STUDIES - 1.5 Hours
  • Approximately 30 - 35 Questions
  • Includes 1 extended written response to passages and/or graphics - up to 25 minutes

SCIENCE - 1.5 Hours
  • Approximately 30 - 35 Questions
  • Includes 2 short answer written responses to passages and/or graphics - up to 10 minutes each

COMPUTER BASED QUESTION FORMATS
  • Multiple Choice
  • Fill in the Blank
  • Drag and Drop
  • Hot Spot
  • Short Answer
  • Extended Response
  • You will be required to read and interpret passages and word problems throughout the test.
  • Three sections require you to read a passage or two and compose a response about what  you just read. You will employ evidence based writing in which you cite specific evidence from the readings in your response. 
  • Math items will appear on both the Science and Social Studies Tests.
  • You are strongly encouraged to purchase a held held version of the Texas Instruments TI-30XS MultiView calculator for use in your GED Prep class and on your actual GED Test.

SCORING YOUR TEST
  • NOT PASSING - less than 150 on any of the four sub-tests
  • GED PASSING - score at or higher than the minimum score of 150 per test needed to demonstrate high school equivalency
  • GED SCORE WITH HONORS - score at or higher than the minimum score of 170 per test to demonstrate career and college readiness.
